The
history of statistics: the measurement of uncertainty before 1900
by Stephen Stigler
An entertaining approach with enough good stories and plain English
to make it accessible to those of us who did a bit of stats once,
but can't remember much. On the other hand, there are plenty of
pages of symbols to entertain the cognoscenti. He treats the worlds
of physical and social sciences in separate sections and provides
a stimulating comparison in consequence. I first dipped into this
book to find out a bit more about Bayes, but it has rewarded much
more systematic reading.
