BICOM
The Brunel Institute of Computational Mathematics
presents
MAFELAP 2009

THE MATHEMATICS OF FINITE ELEMENTS AND APPLICATIONS 2009

This conference is dedicated to Mary Wheeler and John Whiteman both having reached the age of 70.

The internationally recognized MAFELAP conferences have been run by BICOM at Brunel University at three year intervals since 1972. In these conferences exposure is given to research on the theory and practical application of finite element methods.

The thirteenth conference on the Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications will be held at Brunel University and run during

9 - 12 June, 2009

The aim will again be to bring together workers from different disciplines whose common interest is finite element methods, and to promote wider awareness throughout the finite element community of the latest developments in the field.

Registration and fees

Registration for MAFELAP 2009 IS NOW CLOSED.

Deadlines

There are three deadlines:

Call for papers and mini-symposia

Although many have already been proposed, we are still encouraging colleagues to organise mini-symposia at MAFELAP. Briefly, the parameters for a mini-symposium are that we shall allocate a time-slot to the organisers, during which they can have four speakers, each giving a presentation (probably 30 minutes: 25 minutes talk plus 5 minutes for questions). If organisers want more than four talks, then we can give them two or more time slots.

We are actively seeking proposals for mini symposia. If you are interested in organising a mini symposium please contact either Professor Norbert Heuer on nheuer@mat.puc.cl or Carolyn Sellers on carolyn.sellers@brunel.ac.uk. and submit a title and tentative list of speakers as soon as possible.

We look forward to hearing from you.

A list of all currently proposed mini-symposia can be found here. This is only an indication of what mini-symposia will take place at MAFELAP 2009. It is constantly being updated, and all information is subject to change. If you are interested in participating in any one (or more) of these events please feel free to contact the organisers directly or contact us first and we will put you in touch.

As previously the conference will also contain sessions of contributed talks (ie talks not in specific mini-symposia) and any colleague wishing to present a contributed talk is strongly encouraged to submit a title and abstract as per the instructions here. All submitted abstracts will be reviewed.

Instructions for authors

So that a book of abstracts can be produced we request that all authors adhere to the guidelines found here. If your document does not conform to these guidelines then it is unlikely that we will have time to convert it, and therefore unlikely that it will be circulated to delegates.

Internet and Technical Information

Before travelling please read the further information available here.

Each of the lecture rooms at MAFELAP 2009 will be equipped with white boards, pens and an overhead projector. They will also have a basic locked-down teaching PC together with a means of projecting its screen onto the wall, and there will be a VGA cable for connecting a laptop to this projector. Please note that we are UNABLE to supply gender changers for use with laptops that do not have a VGA output connection. If you have a non-VGA machine you will need to supply your own VGA adaptor if you want to connect to our projectors. This typically affects Apple Macs but is also relevant to newer models of other equipment.

Please note that we will not have administrator access to this PC which means that some drivers may fail to load for some makes of USB flash memory (memory sticks).

The PC will however be connected to the internet and so, as a back-up, we suggest that you place your presentation file on your personal home page. Then, in case of any difficulty reading your media, you can download your file directly to the PC.

We have no control whatsoever over these machines and so if you plan to use any software other than standard PDF our advice to you is to either bring your own laptop, or to arrange to borrow a colleague's on which you have already tested your presentation and/or auxilliary software.

Before travelling please read the further information available here.

Please also note that:

Internet access

The bedrooms will have ethernet ports to allow internet access but please bring your own ethernet (RJ45) cable as we are not able to supply them. Also Brunel University only officially supports Windows environments, and so you may find that other operating systems give errors.

The access will be a restricted guest account but should be sufficient for you to either access webmail or use ssh.

Obviously you will only be able to use this facility if you have your own computer. If you are travelling without a machine then there will be a limited facility for logging in (again to a guest account) on a campus machine. Please ask for details of this when you register.
