Currently, insulin inhalers are limited to increments 8x that of subcutaneous insulin. Introducing motorised dosage dispensing independent from the aerosolization process allows smaller dose increments.
Piezoelectric transducer and microperforated vibration membrane for amplification, with tuneable propellant droplet size as small as 2µm for better lung deposition. Low pressure removes need of valved holding chamber. Variable inhalation limits effectiveness of inhaled treatments, decreasing the accuracy of released doses. Airflow sensors on the flow control valve allow drug release at point of sustained peak inhalation to control delivery.
Facing feedback indicators for smart inhalation are vital, as they instruct the user’s inhalation, signal drug release, and sufficient lung deposition. Interface design is integral to the effectiveness of the product, as is development of form to reflect requirements of the feedback process. The inhalor is styled yellow to match standard codes for doses of fast-acting insulin.
