Mathematics Tests

These tests form part of Brunel University's Learn Higher CETL.

NB: The following tests are only accessible to Brunel University Students and Staff on the Brunel network, logged in to the PC with their Brunel USERID or student number. The system reads this userid and attributes marks to that person only.So if you work in a group, only the person who originally logged into the PC will get the marks and the others will have to log in thmselves later.

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE

Firstly, add this page to your favourites so you can return directly here (not via BBL).
You may need to be viewing this page using Internet Explorer (not Chrome, Firefox etc).

RIGHT Click

on the tests below, do SAVE AS to save the .bat file to your desktop (or elsewhere) and then run that file by saying RUN if offered or going to the desktop and double clicking the .bat file.
You do not need to download it again or even come back to this page; simply double click the .bat file every time you feel the need to do some lovely maffs!

You need to be at a PUBLIC DOMAIN machine at Brunel University for the tests to work.

In non-public-domain labs (e.g. those administered by individual schools/departments and not Brunel's Computer Centre) they may still work; if they do, then I will get answer files.
ONLY COMPLETED ATTEMPTS WILL COUNT TOWARDS MARKS FOR ANY MODULE.
N.B. Every time you enter a test it counts as an attempt, whether or not you complete the test. Killing a test in any way still counts as an attempt and this will have been recorded. Be sure to use the software to finish and do not simply close the window.

The system picks up the userid of whoever is logged into the network, not into BlackBoard Learn (BBL), so if you are working with someone else, you'll have to reboot to change this, not just log into BBL as the other person. It's usually legal to work in a team (ask the module leader what they want), and this can be good in fact since you'll learn more, but be aware that only the person who logged into the network gets the marks (BBL is nothing to do with it in fact and you should add the entry page to your favourites anyway)

A few of you have reported that one of the test freezes sometimes. As far as I know the tests all work correctly. I suspect this is either a memory or network problem. Here's what you should do:

From time to time the module leader will email you your marks. Note the date in the file name so anything done after that would not show up until the next update.

Need help?

The ASK Maths & Stats Support Tutors, Inna and Noel, are available in the LIBRARY ... they are very helpful in sorting out underlying maths problems, so don't suffer in silence!

Mathematics, Referencing & Plagiarism diagnostic tests and an Employability Aptitude Numeracy test
and Programming tests: for general use

Any Brunel student can take these tests as often as he/she likes.

Module-specific tests

CS0002 VB Programming tests for Dr Yongmin Li
Foundations of Mathematics & Computing students take these tests.

CS2004 Algorithms and their Applications tests for Dr Mahir Arzoky

NOTE: As mentioned above you need to be at a PUBLIC DOMAIN machine at Brunel University for the tests to work and RIGHT CLICK the links. In non-public-domain labs (e.g. those administered by individual schools/departments and not Brunel's Computer Centre) they may still work; if they do, then I will get answer files.

PRACTICE TESTS

CLASS TEST 1
MA1611 Calculus with Dr Paresh Date
Mathematics level 1 students should take these tests in the invigilated session.

MA1620 Complex numbers and linear algebra with Dr Rhiannon Hall
Mathematics level 1 students should take these tests in the invigilated session.

Practice Questions

Almost all of the computer-aided assessment questions above are available from home on PC (any browser) or Mac (using Firefox - not Safari) via the maths e.g. web application. It should also work on mobile devices (e.g. I-pad & phones).
PGCE Numeracy & Maths practice tests
PGCE students take these tests.
Entry into Mathematics Practice Tests.
The goal is to score reasonable mark on one of your attempts. If you do not achieve this, this is a very good indication that you should seek with the ASK Maths Support Tutor (Dr Inna Namestnikova) in the LIBRARY ... she is very helpful in sorting out underlying maths problems, so don't suffer in silence! Talk to friends too - they'll benefit from explaining it to you too!

The menu you will see has two Numeracy Tests - make a good attempt at doing them both. This is the serious bit!!

The following are optional and a bit of an experiment so I'd value your views on them. Email: Martin.Greenhow@brunel.ac.uk
Test 3 is just a self-appraisal of your confidence,
Test 4 is for those who remember their GCSE and may have studied maths beyond GCSE and
Test 5 is about effective communication.

Good luck!

In order to study effectively, you need to understand the material ... your lecturers can help you with that ... AND you need to get organised. My study skills guide at:

will help with this. Have a look!
