Comments about getting the Matlab software

The Matlab software is a product produced by MathWorks and is not free although there is a student version (see below).

There are also free alternatives although they will not work in exactly the same way as Matlab and the appearance will be slightly different. The Matlab clones that I know about are Octave and Freemat .

The student version of Matlab

The student version is available at the following link click here . I understand that the the student version will run on linux and Mac OS X, as well as Windows, although if you are using one of these operating systems it is advisable to check first that it is compatible with the the version that you use.

Octave

A windows installer for version 4.0.0.0 from May 2015 is available at the following link

Octave will run on linux and Mac OS X, as well as Windows, and for further information use the following link click here .

For information, it is possible to quickly install this in our labs provided you select somewhere on the local D: drive as the installation directory. It does not require any adminstrative permissions to install the software.

If you select

D:\software\Octave-4.0.0
as the install point then the binary to run for the GUI version is
D:\software\Octave-4.0.0\bin\octave-gui.exe

Freemat

FreeMat will run on linux and Mac OS X, as well as Windows, and for further information use the following link
