Welcome to the
website of the British Academy Project "The Acculturation of Polish
Immigrants into British Society"
Since the expansion of the EU into Eastern Europe in May 2004, large
number of workers have come from the East to work in Britain. The
largest group of these have been from Poland. At the moment however we
know little about how these Poles are adjusting to their new life in the
UK, or the consequences of this for their health, employment prospects
or wider involvement with British society. This study, which ran from
2007-2009, explored this through a longitudinal analysis. 400 Poles
who have recently come to the UK completed the on-line questionnaire
(click below) within 3 months of their arrival in the UK. They then
repeated this questionnaire twice more at 9 month intervals, with around
55% completing all three waves of data. 30 Polish
migrants also took part in interviews twice, a year apart
The project was directed by
Professor Robin Goodwin at Brunel University, London, with the
collaboration of Professor Pascale Allotey (Brunel) and Dr Anat Bardi
(University of Kent, Canterbury).
Findings are preliminary at present and further analysis
is currently taking place on the data. Please contact Professor Goodwin
for preliminary findings.
